Notes for THOMAS ROBBINS, JR. [13]:
There were Robbins families moving into Alabama
as early as Aug 22, 1805, when a
George Robbins bought land from Zadoc Brashear
on the west margin of the Tombigbee
River in what is now Washington Co., Ala, but
was then still part of the Mississippi Territory.
The first Thomas Robbins to move into Ala was
listed on the 1840 & 1850 Covington Co., Ala.
Federal Census and was our Thomas's father.
Besides Thomas, Sr. [12] on the 1840 Census in
Covington Co., there were 3 other Robbins
families, namely, Cade, James and Merrell listed
as heads of households. And by then, there
were numerous Robbins families with the last name
spelled as Robins and Robbins in the
following counties: Limestone, 1; Marshall, 1;
Walker, 6; Blount, 4; Jefferson, 1; Coosa, 3;
Autauga, 1; Sumter, 6; Wilcox, 1; Butler, 1; Lowndes,
1; Baldwin, 1; Conecuh, 2; and Montgomery.
The last named county of Montgomery listed Hardy,
who I'm pretty sure was related to our bunch
because one of our Thomas's sons was named Hardy,
probably after this one.
Thomas and his family were listed on the 1860 Walton
Co., FL Census, along with his
2nd wife Martha R. (Bradley), indicating that
Matilda died between the birth of Hardy in
May 1852 & 1859 - a daughter, Mary E. was
born in 1858, so it is possible that Matilda
died in childbirth when she was born, or Mary
E. could be the 1st child born to Martha &
Thomas, which would put their marriage date at
about 1857. Their 2nd daughter, Martha
Ann, was born in Jan of 1860 in AL, and the family
were enumerated in June 1860 on the
Walton Co., FL Census, indicating that they moved
from AL to FL sometime between Feb.
& June of 1860. The next child, son John H.,
was born in March 1863 in FL., and son,
William was born 5 Apr. 1865 in FL The next child,
George D., was born 8 Oct 1868 in AL.
Three more children were born in AL thru 1875,
so after that brief 5 or 6 years in Walton Co.,
FL, they lived out the rest of their years in
Rose Hill, AL.
The last census on which Thomas appeared was the
1880 AL census taken the 22nd day of
June, so his death is assumed to have taken place
sometime in the mid 1880s - no grave site
for him has been found, so it has been impossible
to find out the exact date.
